This publication is an alphabetized surname index of the first book of the City of Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, Marriage Register covering the period July 1, 1876 to October 1, 1885. The original book was indexed by date of marriage. These abstracts are listed by the male surname, given name and include residence at time of marriage, place of birth, age, marriage date, female name, her place of birth, age, church, and minister’s name. Approximately 5,500 marriages are included in this record. Couples were not necessarily from the city of Reading. Many of the marriages were of couples living in surrounding townships and counties. Starting October 1, 1885, marriage licenses were required. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the bride’s maiden name along with the name of the husband.
