CD: A History of Brooklyn and Kings County, New York, Volumes I and II - Stephen M. Ostrander. This two-volume set contains a comprehensive narrative history of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County, New York. This work follows the evolution of this area from the Glacial Period through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and concludes with societal and commercial developments in the late 1800s. At the time of his death in 1885, Stephen M. Ostrander had completed the majority of this work but it is Alexander Black who edited these volumes and added the Introduction and Notes.Volume One opens with an examination of the region of Brooklyn at the time of discovery, including the geology and conformation of Long Island; the earliest historical description of Long Island by Daniel Denton; and a look at trees, animal life, and Indian tribes. Subsequent chapters are devoted to explorers, such as Henry Hudson; early settlements, early settlers and Indians relations; Breuckelen, 1643-1647; domestic and social life under the Dutch, 1647-1664; Kings County after the English conquest, 1665-1700; Brooklyn before the Revolution, 1701-1775; and Kings County during the Revolution, 1775-1783.Volume Two opens with a discussion of Brooklyn after the Revolution, 1784-1810; followed by Brooklyn Village, 1811-1833; the City of Brooklyn, 1834-1860; the Civil War, 1861-1865; Brooklyn after the war, 1866-1876; and Brooklyn between 1877 and 1893.The book is presented as graphic images, so the user see the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a real book. There is no electronic index, and there is no electronic text to search. However, numerous electronic bookmarks have been added which make it easy to move through the book. Image numbers will match the page numbers for all of the main text, as well as the index. Any unnumbered portraits and illustrations are at the back of the actual file, to keep page numbering consistent. The electronic bookmarks and check-marked information on the Welcome Page provide links to each book listed. The original full name index, maps and vintage illustrations are included.
