$24.00

This book contains epitaphs copied from 575 grave stones which the author has augmented with genealogical and biographical notes. These notes vary in length from a short sentence to several pages. The stones provide a limited amount of information such as name of the deceased, date of death; some list age or birth date, some refer to a spouse or parent, and many include a verse. The author’s notes offer a variety of detailed information about the deceased and may include any of the following: date of birth, place of birth, name of spouse, date of marriage, church standing, military service, civil service, occupation, names of parents, names of children, cause of death, and more. A physical description of the grave stone is sometimes provided.“The epitaphs included in this volume, and those which I contributed to the Dedham Historical Register for April, 1899, were copied by me [the author] in the autumns of 1897 and 1898. In the genealogical and biographical notes I have utilized my large collection of memoranda copied from the Needham town and church records, and these are the sources of my information unless otherwise indicated.”An appendix lists assessors for the Town of Needham prior to the division of the town in 1881. It also gives the Names of Members of the Standing Committee of the First Parish which “includes soldiers of the Revolution and others long prominent in the affairs of the town, church and parish.” A full-name index completes this work.
