Georgetown, District of Columbia 1850 Federal Population Census (Schedule I) and 1853 Directory of Residents of Georgetown - Wesley E. Pippenger. The information in this work was taken from a National Archives microfilm publication, Microcopy 432, “Population Schedules of the Seventh Census of the United States, 1850” made in 1963. A total of 7,643 persons are listed. The Georgetown data is found on Roll 57, pages 148 through 240. Schedule I of the Census was the result of original returns created by assistant marshals collecting data about the white and free colored population. slave schedules were created separately. The jurisdiction of Georgetown boundaries in 1842 were the Potomac River to the south, Rock Creek to the east, the bridge across the Potomac at the Little Falls to the northwest, and to the poor-house tract called “Pretty Prospect’ adjacent to Beatty and Hawkins addition to the town to the north. No directory of Georgetown residents is known to have been made between 1834 and 1853--making this an invaluable resource to researchers.
