Charles Porterfield was one of many Virginians who helped secure America's independence. He served in Daniel Morgan's rifle company at Boston and Quebec. He commanded a company in Morgan's 11th Virginia Regiment as well as William Maxwell's Light Infantry Corps. Porterfield fought in the battles of Cooches Bridge, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth, and endured the hardships of Valley Forge. He returned to Virginia in 1779 and served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the state garrison regiment. In 1780, he led a relief detachment to South Carolina and initiated the Battle of Camden. The distinguished service of Charles Porterfield and his men is chronicled through numerous first person accounts.
